Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist
Thomas is a Spinal Specialist Physiotherapist with over 16 years of experience in musculoskeletal and sports medicine. As a clinician his special interest is in the rehabilitation of those with spinal pain from both athletic and non-athletic backgrounds. He is actively involved in research having co-authored a number of peer reviewed studies on spinal function and pain. He is also a passionate educator and teaches internationally in the area of spinal rehabilitation.
Prior to entering the Physiotherapy profession he gained a first-class honours degree (BSc) in Physiology from University College Cork. He qualified as a Physiotherapist after completing a Master's in Physiotherapy (MSc) from the University of East Anglia. Thomas initially worked in the NHS across a number of musculoskeletal services before entering into private practice on London’s Harley Street and elite sport.
In 2013 he travelled to Brisbane, Australia, to complete a Master's in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland (MPhty) - an international centre of excellence in spinal rehabilitation research. He completed the course with distinction and achieved a peer-review publication for his thesis work in spinal biomechanics using infra-red 3D motion analysis and force plate technology.
He returned to Harley Street to work at The Centre for Health and Human Performance (now Marylebone Health), having a dual role as clinical manager and spinal team lead. At this time he also started working with British Olympic athletes at the English Institute of Sport within a number of disciplines. To broaden his exercise prescription approach he completed training with the National Strength and Conditioning Association to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). While in London he also worked at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) at University College London as a research associate and visiting lecturer on the Sports Medicine Masters.
He returned to Ireland in 2016 and founded 2 successful private practices in West Cork. He also began working as team Physiotherapist with the Cork senior Gaelic football team. In 2020, continuing to follow his passion for the spine rehabilitation, he began a PhD at Technological University Dublin, investigating the back pain in athletes. He has published 2 studies from this body of work and research is on-going.
Clinically he now works in an advanced practice role at Cork University Hospital as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within the neurosurgery team, working alongside the team of neurosurgeons and also maintaining a rehabilitation caseload of patients with complex spinal pain. He consults privately at Bespoke Physiotherapy in Cork city, seeing patients and athletes of all ages and abilities with spinal pain.
Alongside his clinical, research and teaching roles, he also hosts ‘All Things Spinal’- a free live educational platform where he engages with leading clinicians and researchers in spinal pain to disseminate up the latest research and tools for clinicians world wide.
